Vegas, baby!
Vegas is the city of lights; the city that never sleeps. Imagine a sky full of stars blanketing the city and twinkling all night through, that’s Vegas for you. Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world.
If you’ve seen “What happens in Vegas” starring Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz, you would think Vegas is the place where people get drunk, party all night and marry each other in a state of drunken stupor ...and you would be right! Bachelors and single women flock to Vegas to have wild parties with booze and in the company of the opposite sex.
But what I discovered as a tourist in Vegas is that you can have an amazing time even if you are not there with your friends or looking to get wild. I was in Vegas with my mom and I had the best time ever. Granted, she is a cool mom :)
There are numerous five-star hotels with casinos attached and most of them are on the Strip. “The Las Vegas Strip is an approximately 4.2-mile (6.8 km) stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South in Clark County, Nevada. Fifteen of the world's 25 largest hotels by room count are on the Strip, with a total of over 62,000 rooms.” says wikipedia.
We stayed at Bally’s, one such hotel on the Strip. The casino on the ground floor was abuzz with activity. The hotel also hosts the ‘Jubilee’ show with the famous Las Vegas showgirls. We skipped the show since we weren’t in Vegas for that long and we were heading for the Grand Canyon the next day. After checking into the hotel, the first thing we did was to explore the hotels nearby – Paris, MGM, the Venetian – all were within a stone’s throw. So were the famous Bellagio and Caesar’s Palace, which featured in the smash movie hit, ‘The Hangover’.
In the evening, we walked over to the Bellagio and studied the beautiful interiors. With giant replicas of ants and bumblebees, the interiors left us feeling that we were visiting another world, a world where life acquired unbelievable grandeur and opulence.
We also watched the dancing fountain outside the Bellagio, where jets of water illuminated by colourful lights streamed upward really high and “danced” to the lilting music. A little further away was the miniature Eiffel tower lit up with lights just like the rest of Vegas.
After dinner at an Indian restaurant ‘Tamba’, we went downtown to Fremont street to watch the laser show on Viva Vision, a dome-like roof, which served as a backdrop for the laser show and covered the length of the street. We could see visual laser projections of Queen’s “We will rock you” on the roof and the euphoric song filled the air along with cheers and hoots from the tourists gathered there.
When we headed back to our room in the hotel, we continued to look through the window and marvel at the city lights that twinkled all night through.
